How can the world measure human development better?

In todays world the focus has shifted towards more sustainable ways of development . The greener your energy is , the less CO2 you emit , the lesser you use fossil fuels and less wastage are all gaining importance.

Lets say if moving to convenience was the priority once, today its also become a little more mature to start looking at how to make my convenience not hurt the world around me.

Now the question is should the world still continue to classify countries based on Human Development index — HDI .

Does having a high HDI always guarantee that the countries have been following sustainable practices .

What if high had well lit roads and extra high income per person but 90 % of electricity is generated by burning coal or fossil fuels and 95 % of my transport options are dependent on fossil fuels . Is this really developed ?

Shouldn't developing policies around sustainably and ensuring the progress in ethically and environmental friendly ways be the new norm .

So why not we switch to SDI ?

Wait what is SDI in first place .

Sustainable Development Index (SDI) measures the ecological efficiency of human development, recognizing that development must be achieved within planetary boundaries. It was created to update the Human Development Index (HDI) for the ecological realities of the Anthropocene.

SDI is a relatively new concept on how to measure human development .

Current SDI ranking’s

Wait why are the so called developed countries missing in this list ?

That's the problem no one told us , If we look at HDI or Human Development index then all the capitalist countries keep taking up the top spots.

Who would make it to top spot on SDI ?

voila all the socialist ones of course.

Brings back the socialist vs capitalist development model debate.

Socialism is on a decline globally, it’s a common mystical belief nowadays that better economic growth and progress should already have won the battle for capitalism, but has it really ?

Clearly the socialist model was less aggressive and less damaging to environment, as the capitalists pure focus was profit .

Nobody bothered to ask questions on the growth model or industries to stop them when it replaced a large population or when they were setup in economically fragile zones.

Almost all the ones which was socialistic or semi socialistic didn't really have stockpiles of dollars to there citizen and hence was at the bottom of the ladder with HDI .

So coming back , what would be better for human development after 2022 ?

Human development can no longer be tied just to individual pay or purchasing power parity (PPP) it should meaningfully look at the cost effectiveness of the model it should start looking at environment , sustainable practices , carbon footprint reduction among others.

Socialism did ensure that the development reached more equally to all sections of the society.

Also in socialist countries they didn't create a super rich 1–2 % of the population enjoying disparate rights and luxuries to the 99 % wage earners . Ratios of the wealthy sit at more comfortable levels above 15 % .

“Socialism always weighed development against the human cost.”

In the days ahead when world wakes up to climate change , the world will need to look at an alternative way to say who is developing better .

I sincerely hope that we do replace SDI as the true cost measure of human development .

If not the only measure SDI should become as equally important to HDI for measuring human progress.
